Duomo di Pistoia; navata centrale

The interior of the San Zeno Cathedral

Pistoia is my birthplace and I love it very much! I love to lose myself in the narrow streets and squares of the old town, admiring the beautiful Romanesque facades of its many churches!

The picturesque Piazza della Sala and the monumental Piazza del Duomo (Duomo Square) are the two spots in my city I love most! I never get tired of admiring the architectural beauty of our Town Hall, Bell Tower and Cathedral! The San Zeno Cathedral, the Duomo of Pistoia, is really a wonderful example of Tuscan Romanesque architecture, with its green and white facade. The statues of San Jacopo and San Zeno, the patron saints of our town, welcome the visitors from the top of the facade! And Jacopo and Zeno are the first names of many Pistoia’s citizens!

I am always impressed by the sober and austere interior of the Cathedral, with the floor of the presbytery raised above the crypt, in perfect Romanesque style. I always lose myself in admiring the wonderful artistic treasures that make my Duomo one of the most beautiful churches of Tuscany: the Baptismal Font sculptured by Benedetto da Maiano, the wooden Crucifix painted by Coppo di Marcovaldo, the splendid crypt, the tomb of the Dolce Stil Novo poet Cino da Pistoia, a friend of Dante… And many more! But my favorite work of art is undoubtedly the precious Silver Altar of San Jacopo, extraordinary masterpiece of sacred jewelery made over two centuries by some talented goldsmiths, including a young Filippo Brunelleschi. Don’t miss to visit these wonderful treasures during your next trip to Tuscany!
