David 3

Michelangelo’s David

I’m going to experience one of the greatest thrills of my life: to see live Michelangelo’s David … The original, the real one!

I enter inside the Accademia Gallery, beautiful museum housed inside a former Florentine hospital, born as a workshop studio for the students of the nearby Accademia di Belle Arti (School of Fine Arts). The first space I find is the Hall of the Colossus, where I can admire the imposing plaster cast of the famous Rape of the Sabines by Giambologna, and a collection of beautiful artworks on religious subjects by Florentine artists from the XV century to the early XVI century, as Filippino Lippi, Paolo Uccello and Sandro Botticelli.

I leave the Hall of the Colossus to enter into the next room… And I suddenly feel a skipped heartbeat! I’m inside the Gallery of the Prisoners, which houses the four statues of the Prisoners (or Slaves) and the St. Matthew. I admire one by one these beautiful examples of Michelangelo’s unfinished technique, but I’m attracted by what is in the back of the gallery: the imposing and majestic  Michelangelo’s David, the original one, which stands inside the beautiful neoclassical Tribune built to host it. I lose myself to admire the perfection of this masterpiece, the anatomical details sculptured so realistically by the artistic genius of Michelangelo! What a beauty and harmony made from a “cold” block of marble!

Before leaving the Gallery, I discover many other interesting works of art: some fine Florentine Gothic gold-backed paintings by Giottesque artists, precious works by late Gothic Florentine painters… And much more!
